PLOT AND SUMMARY:

"Sanjay Leela Bhansali" the unconventional director, 3 years after his last film "Guzaarish" has returned all guns blazing with his latest asset. With a rather long and controversial name, "Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela" has lived up to the huge expectations. An adaption of sorts of the greatest tragic love story of all times "Romeo and Juliet", the film can be called Bhansali’s Gujarati tribute to the classic.

The plot is set in present day Gujarat, where a deadly (much clichéd) feud exists between two powerful families since past many generations. The main business prevalent all across the village is that of arms, ammunition, smuggling etc and it is a common site to observe shooting, gang wars taking place in open day-light.

It would be unfair to compare the movie with Bhansali’s earlier creations, they are all classics in their own special way and “..Ram-Leela” has all the right ingredients to follow their path to glory. It has been beautifully shot and conceptualized with exquisite sets, surreal surroundings, and splendid costumes adding to the brilliant display of colours – quite typical of Bhansali’s style. What didn’t impress me much was the music-score of the film, which I found quite contrary to what Bhansali is known for especially in some of his musicals, like – Khamoshi, Devdas. But I’m hoping that the movie songs, like many others, will grow up on me with time.

goliyon ki rasleela ram-leela

Other than all this what makes “..Ram-Leela” a fantastic movie to watch, is the brilliant performance (read career best) by lead actor Ranveer Singh who plays ‘Ram’ and quite literally steals the show from other actors with his exuberance and charisma (other than his perfectly chiseled muscular frame). The gorgeous Deepika Padukone plays the vivacious female lead ‘Leela’, her performance might give you reminiscences of her happy-go-lucky role in ‘Love Aaj Kal’, ‘Cocktail'. In terms of performance, a special mention is well deserved by the immensely talented Supriya Pathak who has delivered many astounding scenes, Richa Chaddha for her strong portrayal of ‘Raseela’. Not to forget the sensuous item-number performed by the hot-siren Priyanka Chopra.

Overall the 2 hour 35 minutes long film is a scintillating entertainer; jam packed with sensuous romance, fierce action and intriguing drama to say the least. Personally, I liked the fact that the film does not follow the regular bollywood love-revenge cliché but rather it is an intelligent film which has many unpredictable parts. So, go ahead, enjoy and experience Bhansali’s surreal imagination.
