PLOT AND SUMMARY:

Okay first of all sorry to break your expectation bubble guys, the movie doesn't live up to the immense hype that it created. Given the magnificent music and appealing promos most of us (including me) were anxiously looking forward to this Rom Com. The movie isn't a disaster its just that it had the caliber to be a Blockbuster and that's why the disappointment. Cocktail is a modest take on a contemporary love triangle story based in London or better still about an awesome threesome ;)

Saif Ali Khan plays the role of the male lead Gautam pretty well. Gautam is newly shifted to London and is an uber-cool, hip and charming Casanova who has his way around almost every girl he feels attracted to. He loves his single life, flaunting his womanizer skills. On the other hand Deepika Padukone plays the role of London based ultra modern chick Veronica. Veronica usually escape the realities of life by keeping herself busy clubbing, drinking which is a result of her bad, and wild upbringing. The third lead in the film Meera is played by the beautiful debutant model turned actor Diana Penty. She plays the role of a sweet, shy and simple north Indian newly wed bride who lands in London to find out that her marriage was a hoax that the groom (played by Randeep Hooda) did just for money, a typical scenario prevalent widely in Punjab. She plays a likeable role, with a decent enough debut performance.

The movie starts off well and continues with good pace throughout the 1st half. With Veronica comforting Meera during her bad time and then sharing her own place with her, they both strike off well and fall into a strong friendship even though being poles apart. Gautam enters their lives by starting a fun but casual live-in relationship with Veronica, though Meera literally hates him largely due to his careless womanizer attitude.

The movie takes a turn when Gautam's typical Punjabi mother (delightfully played by Dimple Kapadia) enters the scene unannounced to experience utter shock seeing his son living-in with 2 girls. To save his skin, in the heat of the moment Gautam introduces Meera as his girlfriend to his Mother who feels proud for her son's lovely choice. The story then takes a twist Gautam after spending much time with Meera, falls in love with her and vice versa. Then the two-paced 2nd half starts with things falling apart in the once perfect friendship of the trio. With some confession, tension, heartaches and patch ups the story finally comes to a predictable end.

Somehow the weakness in the script will cost the movie dearly, though Imtiaz Ali has written some fabulous dialogues. The movie should recover its money in due time, given that it already grossed a whopping 10-11 crore on the first day itself. And a major chunk of credit goes to the fantastic music of the film, some spectacular compostions by Pritam (hope they are original - pun intended). Pritam specifically for this album seems to have had a big punjabi influence with almost all compositions having a touch of punjabi. He certainly seems to have struck the right chord and combination this time. Using Pakistani Coke Studio sensation Arif Lohar in a beautiful cover of the original song, then the movie contains a surprise Yo Yo Honey Singh track as the casting song (which made the audience go bonkers), then another catchy number with the popular punjabi singer Miss Pooja. Pritam certainly deserves all the praises.

The movie no doubt has some great humorous moments, with Saif at his hilarious best especially in the first half. A touch of brilliance here and there by Deepika particularly in the drunk scenes. Diana will surely win many hearts and fans with her good debut performance though she still needs some brushing up. At some moments the scenes become ridiculously predictable and that is dissapointing. And the story many a times will give you a 'been there seen that' feel, some bits and parts will remind you of previous similar genre films like Love Aaj Kal, Salaam Namaste, Dostana.

Still this intoxicating Cocktail is a decent mix, because of the following ingredients: Performances which the actors have delivered, the music and the entertainment.
